{"id":48109,"date":"2024-08-16T06:54:11","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T05:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bodyshopmag.com\/?p=48109"},"modified":"2024-08-16T06:54:11","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T05:54:11","slug":"new-hgv-sales-bounce-back-after-slow-start-to-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bodyshopmag.com\/2024\/news\/new-hgv-sales-bounce-back-after-slow-start-to-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"New HGV sales bounce back after slow start to 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodyshopmag.com\/?s=hgv\">HGV<\/a>\u00a0sales in the UK rose 2.6% between April and June, according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodyshopmag.com\/?s=smmt\">SMMT<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This comes after a decline in sales in the first quarter of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Spring saw 11,469 new HGVs enter service, with growth driven by a rise in rigid truck uptake. Rigids rose 9.7% to reach 6,640 units, taking a 57.9% market share, while artic volumes were down by 5.7% to 4,829 units.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, zero emission vehicle (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodyshopmag.com\/?s=zev\">ZEV<\/a>) uptake also continued to grow, buoyed by ever-expanding choice. Uptake rose by 30% to achieve a 0.6% share of market, up from 0.4% in the same period last year.<\/p>\n<h2>New HGV sales<\/h2>\n<p>But market share remains low and with just over a decade to go until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-confirms-pledge-for-zero-emission-hgvs-by-2040-and-unveils-new-chargepoint-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">end of sale of non-ZEV HGVs<\/a> weighing less than 26 tonnes, operators, facing a limited grant system and lacklustre rollout of HGV-specific charging facilities, are facing an uphill struggle to meet targets.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe truck market\u2019s return to growth after a slower start to the year demonstrates its robustness and resilience \u2013 particularly as overall uptake continues to keep pace with last year and the pent-up demand that fuelled volumes. The UK\u2019s place as Europe\u2019s second largest zero emission truck market also demonstrates Britain\u2019s potential to be a leader in the ZEV truck transition.
